Department of Biomedical Informatics - University of Pittsburgh

Training Program

The Department of Biomedical Informatics/Pittsburgh Biomedical Informatics Training Program expects to have openings for predoctoral and postdoctoral informatics traineeships beginning in the summer of 2008. Please see the department’s recruitment overview for more details.

The Pittsburgh Biomedical Informatics Training Program, established in 1987, prepares individuals for research and development careers emphasizing the application of modern technology to health care, basic biological and clinical research, and the education of health professionals. The program welcomes talented individuals who may be health professionals seeking formal training in informational and computational methods, or others who may be scientifically trained and seeking to prepare themselves for careers emphasizing biomedical applications of information technology. The program currently has 35 students and offers a range of training experiences to accommodate the diverse backgrounds and aspirations of its students. Active participation in research and development projects is a key element of the training experience in Pittsburgh, and opportunities are available for both applied and theoretical research.

The University of Pittsburgh Training Program in Biomedical Informatics offers both masters and doctoral degrees in Biomedical Informatics, as well as non-degree Postdoctoral Fellowships. If requested, specific concentrations of study can be obtained in the areas of bioinformatics, dental informatics, health services, and biosurveillance. A Certificate Program is also available to serve students with a wide variety of goals and backgrounds. At the discretion of the Director of the Program, short-term traineeships can be arranged. Funding for the program is primarily provided by the National Library of Medicine.

The training program draws on faculty throughout the University of Pittsburgh with 28 core faculty and over 50 affiliated faculty, who span a total of 25 departments and centers. The Department of Biomedical Informatics is located in the Parkvale Building, which is adjacent to the main hospital complex of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on the main campus of the university. This central location greatly facilitates collaboration of trainees with clinicians and researchers in different university departments.
